O M G, ain nobody told me nothinggggg! I'm late to the party, but I'm glad I've arrived, okay! Beauties I started a new series, Survival of the Thickest, on Netflix. Im trying to see where was I when the buzz kicked off for this series?? Now, I just finished season one but seriously, I AM OBSESSED. She's fat, she's black, and FASHIONABLE. Now thats my type of woman. Miss Mavis Beaumont, the beauty she is! This show feels like the perfect representation for fat Black women while still being the kind of easy, funny, feel-good watch that I needed. It gives comedy, friendship, romance, self-discovery, and just enough mess without making everything feel overly heavy. There is something so refreshing about watching a bigger woman be desired, chosen, and genuinely seen without the storyline making her size the punchline or turning her into somebody’s fetish. She gets to be sexy, complicated, confident, insecure, fashionable, ambitious, loved, and everything in between. You know…a whole person. I love the dynamics of her friendships! In the words of Miss Quad, "The state of love! Bonding! Trust! REAL FRIENDSHIP! "😭 Her friendship with Khalil might honestly be one of my favorite parts of the show. I LIVE for a real platonic friendship between a straight man and a woman. No secret crush. No unnecessary “will they, won’t they?” situation. No weirdness. Just good vibes, honesty, love, jokes, and somebody who genuinely has your back. I need television to give us more of that because men and women really can just be friends! Miss India was a cutie, the evolution of her and Khalil's relationship was sweet. From fuck boy to lover boy. IKTR! Then we have Marley, played by the lovely Tasha Smith (she'll always be Angela to me lol) . I love the dynamic between her and Mavis too, especially getting to watch Marley come to terms with and explore her queer side. I liked that we got to see another side of her instead of having her completely figured out from the beginning. There’s something very real about realizing new things about yourself later in life and giving yourself permission to explore. Now Jade…Miss gurl had me QUESTIONING her at first. 😂 I was looking at the screen like, “Mavis girl…are we sure about this roommate?” The scene when her, Mavis, and Khalil were singing DMX and they thought she was about to drop the n* word bomb had me rolling. But she is truly a treasure. Weird? Absolutely. But who doesn’t love a little weird? She ended up being one of my biggest laughs of the season. Jade is exactly the type of character who sneaks up on you. And while we’re talking relationships, I have to mention Natasha. First of all, seeing Garcelle as Natasha was already a win for me. I loved that their relationship didn’t suddenly become overly sentimental. Natasha was still Natasha- dramatic, ridiculous, a little delusional, and completely out of touch, but now you could see that she genuinely had affection for Mavis underneath all of that. When she came around and asked her to work again, Natasha hugging Mavis was so cute to me! Can we also discuss Mavis and her Italian boo?! YES. Mister Lucaaaaaaa Again, I love watching a plus-size woman be pursued because somebody thinks she’s beautiful, interesting, sexy, and worth pursuing. Not as some secret guilty pleasure. Not because the show needs to make some grand statement about her body every five minutes. He likes her because he likes her. Being chosen. Being seen. Being desired. Without being fetishized. We love to see it. Not going to speak too much on that cheating man, but he's def eye candy. *yawns* Aren't they all... Overall the shows feels like such a warm celebration of friendship, black womanhood, queerness, confidence, dating, and figuring your life out when things do not exactly go according to plan. And most importantly, it’s FUNNY. Sometimes I don’t need my television shows stressing me out. Give me the girls, the gays, the outfits, the friendships, the foolishness, a cute man, and let me enjoy myself!
With the conclusion of season one, I cannot wait to see what happens next.
My only complaint?
WHY ARE SHOWS SO SHORT NOW?!
Knowing there are only three seasons has already hurt my feelings. What happened to television shows having 20+ episodes in a season and then staying on TV for eight, nine, ten seasons?! I miss when I could emotionally attach myself to a cast and know we were going to be together for the next decade. Now you fall in love with a show, blink twice, and Netflix is like, "The final season" ????? The fuck is up with that
Like can we bring back endless television!!!
but let me go finish watching chile.

Okay waitttt 😭 I’ve never watched this show, but after reading this I feel like I need to add it to my list immediately! The way you described Mavis and all the friendships has me so curious, especially her and Khalil’s friendship because YES, we need more genuinely platonic male-female friendships on television 😭. And “from fuck boy to lover boy” has me cryinggg 😂. You made the whole show sound like such a fun, easy watch. Adding this to my watchlist as we speak! 💕
